SANSTEP: Spay And Neuter Surgical Training & Education Program
This program has been RACE approved for 20 hrs of CE credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

To gain the knowledge and techniques to become safe, proficient, and efficient at performing spay/neuter surgeries on dogs and cats.
-
To recognize non-routine and challenging spay/neuter surgeries and learn the techniques used to competently perform these unique surgeries. These surgeries include cryptorchid neuters, pregnancies, young puppies and kittens, geriatric dogs and cats, and obese patients.

To learn about and acquire the skills to deal with intra-operative complications in a safe and efficient manner, such as a torn ovarian pedicle, torn spermatic cord, excessive bleeding, and laceration of the spleen, bladder, or colon.

To learn about and acquire the skills to deal with common post-operative complications, such as scrotal swelling, incision dehiscence, infection, bleeding, stump pyometra/granuloma, and retained ovarian syndrome.
PROGRAM AGENDA: SANSTEP is a 3 day program with a total of 20 attendee hours.
Day 1, 1:00pm-5:00pm: 4 hours of lecture-based training presented by Dr. Laura Paris.
Lecture 1: Performing routine spay and neuter surgeries on dogs and cats.
Lecture 2: Performing complicated or challenging spay and neuter surgeries on dogs and cats.
Lecture 3: Intra-operative complications: How to prevent, recognize, and deal with these complications.
Lecture 4: Post-operative complications: How to prevent, recognize, and deal with these complications.
Days 2 & 3, 8:00am-5:00pm: 8 hours of surgery performance and training under direct supervision of Dr. Laura Paris.
Hour 1: Patient positioning, instruments, suture selection, knot types and tying practice.
Hours 2-7: Performing spay and neuter surgeries, ideally at least 2 female dogs, 2 male dogs, 2 female cats, and 2 male cats, each day.
Hour 8: Attendees and trainer discussion about the surgical cases of the day regarding unusual anatomy,
surgical challenges, intra-operative complications, and expectations of post-operative complications.
